New Town on the southern bank of the Qiantang River is a great leap forward of Hangzhou Municipal Government to march from“West Lake Era”into“Qiantang River Era”. It is a newly developed town under the guidance of the new development strategy of“Development of both Banks with Qiantang River as Axis”. The modernized Qiantang New Town has set the keynote for the development across Qiantang River to realize the evolution of the overall city layout from“mountains on three sides and Hangzhou city on one side”to“Qiantang River running through the city proper".

The transportation of both banks becomes faster and more convenient as No.4 Qianjiang Bridge has been built and put into use. The new downtown area is springing up with symbolic landmark of the hemisphere-shaped Hangzhou Grand Theatre. Some years later, an international conference center (with the total investment of RMB 1.2 billion and occupying an area of 100,000 square meters), a large scale underground shopping mall, a central park, a citizen center (already under construction), a uniquely styled sightseeing terrace along Qiantang River and a brand new Central Business District will appear here.

In addition, what is echoing to Qianjiang New Town is the developing Binjiang District where a new typical town South of the Yangtze River in the new century is emerging. Its Enterprise Park focusing on software and high and new technologies industries, full rows of real estate projects and the construction projects of Binjiang New Town have spread all over the southern bank of the Qiantang River. Binjiang New Town is joining Xiaoshan New Town.
